Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth
Rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide in LGBTQ+ youth are alarmingly high. Parents, guardians, and other caring adults can take actions to support better outcomes for youth who identify as LGBTQ+.
Here are a few ways we can support our beautiful 🌈 youth:
1. Use inclusive language ♥️ Making statements of openness to gender and sexual diversity invites young people to explore these aspects of their identity and understand that you are a safe person to talk to about these things.
2. Reach out 🧡 If you’re unsure how to help your youth, that’s ok! There’s a lot of support available that can help you and your youth.
3. Ask them 💛 You don’t need to be a mind reader. It’s ok to ask your youth what they need. Offering support from a place of humility and curiosity is a great place to start.
4. Follow their lead 💚 If you’re noticing that your youth is exploring their identity, allow them to do this on their own time. Meet them wherever they are in their journey without trying to rush them to a conclusion or decision.
5. Provide representation 💙 Watch TV shows with queer characters, have books about gender and sexual diversity available, and support queer artists by showcasing their work in your space.
6. Advocate 💜 Many LGBTQ+ youth face discrimination, harassment, bullying, and/or social inequities. Be an advocate for your youth and stand up for their needs in schools, communities, etc. Before taking action, it’s important to check in and ensure they are comfortable and feel supported by you speaking out.
As we celebrate Pride this month, let’s reflect on the ways we can support LBGTQ+ youth in little and big ways every month of the year ♥️🧡💛💚💙💜
